Marking his first major tournament win, Mexico’s Fernando Galvan took first place in the Planet Hollywood tournament of the 2017 WSOP Circuit. The victory resulted in $247,160 and a Circuit ring for Galvan. Galvan has come a long way from his first cash win in May of last year, when he took third place in the Colorado Poker Championships for $2845. Since then, his winnings have increased with a few nice finishes – over $44,000 in July of this year when he finished first in the Goliath Phamous Poker Series Stack and $72,000 with a third-place finish in the Heartland Poker Main Event in Black Hawk.
The 26-year-old player learned how to play poker by reading books and playing extensively online. He also picked up a lot of tips and skills through Jonathan Little’s site, PokerCoaching.com. Little is a seasoned poker vet with two titles and four final table appearances in the WPT, as well as 26 money finishes in the WSOP. He has over $6.6 million in live-table winnings. Including this latest win, Galvan now has accumulated over $452,000 in live-table winnings and is ranked 693 in the Global Poker Index.
The Planet Hollywood event attracted a total of 845 players and offered a guaranteed prize pool of more than $1 million. Galvan’s time at the final table looked to be short after a huge plunge from chip leader to having only 16 big blinds. However, he was able to capture a few big hands to get back into the game. In the final all-in, Galvan’s Queen pair held against Corey Hochman’s Ace-high hand for the win and the title.
