Following the success of its Grizzly Games, Global Poker raised the stakes and prepared for its largest prize pool to date. Global Poker Madness (GPM) is set to begin on April Fool’s Day, and offers a guarantee of “Sweepstakes Cash” (SC) worth $200,000. So far, the response has been just lukewarm, with a relatively low number of entries.
The $540 buy-in event has seen 41 players sign up. Without a much-larger playing field, Global Poker will have to cough up more of the money to award the prizes. The good news is that there are plenty of low-level satellite tournaments open to win a seat at the GPM. Some of the satellites start for a mere SC$1.50, while the weekly SC$77 event offers a total of 10 seats each. That number will jump to 25 for this Saturday’s SC$77 event.
Global Poker is one of the few US-facing poker sites that can operate legally. It does so by offering players the ability to purchase “Gold Coins” to use in ring games. These coins; however, cannot be redeemed for cash. The purchase of the coins also gives players SC that can be used to participate in tournaments which, unlike the ring games, awards real-money prizes.
