Online poker tournament action reaches a fever pitch this fall with no less than nine series announced across various networks. Over the next several weeks, more than 1,500 scheduled tournaments will play out, awarding over $170 million in prizes. Fall 2018 will be the biggest season in online poker history.
For several years, fall tournament series has been the highlight of the year for online poker players. While live poker action climaxes in the summer, it is September, October, and November that online players anticipate. The tradition has spread from New Jersey’s leading operators to offshore networks.
The bulk of the tournament action can be found at Americas Cardroom/WPN, MPN, Unibet, 888Poker, PartyPoker, and PokerStars. Between these seven operators, there are at least 45 online tournaments with guaranteed prize pools of $1 million.
Buy-ins for events in the various poker series beginning next month range from $0.10 to $25,500. The schedule of events is so packed it can be overwhelming to sort through. The bulk of smaller events creating noise are the result of ramped up competition between PokerStars and PartyPoker.
In an effort to capture more market share during this critical season, PartyPoker has added around 30 percent more tournaments to its schedule. The strategy of both PokerStars and PartyPoker is to attract players with their sheer volume of tournaments, but experienced online players know that typically means fewer players at each table.
Other networks, such as 888Poker, have actually decreased the number of tournaments in their fall series compared to last year.
