The WPT Gardens Main Event concluded yesterday, finding a winner through New York poker pro Simon Lam. Lam took down the event to win $565,055 and a new Mercedes SLC Roadster, valued at about $50,000. He will also receive a $15,000 entry into this year’s Tournament of Champions event and have his name forever engraved on the WPT Champions Cup, alongside the other champions from the tour’s 17 seasons.
The $5,000 main event ran from July 21 to 26 at the Gardens Casino in Hawaiian Gardens, CA. There were a total of 584 entrants, resulting in the prize pool reaching a hefty $2.944 million. With the win, Lam has now earned just under $2 million in live action.
To get to the first-place spot, Lam had to duke it out with Jake Schindler, a poker veteran who has racked up almost $20 million in live-table action, including several first and second-place tournament wins. The two went back and forth for several hands before Lam edged out his opponent for the win. In the final hand, Lam shoved against a check-raise by Schindler after the flop and the two flipped their cards to reveal a Jack race. In the end, Lam’s 9 kicker proved to be strong, barely leading Schindler’s 8 kicker for the victory.
Schindler took $270,430 for his runner-up finish.
